Dr Wilkinson is a working NHS pain physician consultant primarily and was Director of Pain Management Services at Newcastle, UK for 10 years.

He has undertaken medical expert legal work for over 20 years. He estimates that he has a ratio of approx. 60-:40 claimants: defendants and occasional but regular joint instructions. He has attended Court around half dozen times and undertakes 1-2 complex reports per week. His roles are:-

• He was formally Chair of the United Kingdon Specialist Professional Standards Committee which oversee medical standards of Pain Practice in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland serving a 6 year double term and continues to work in this field.

• He is former Vice President of the British Pain Society.  

• Following 6 years on the board of the Faculty of Pain Medicine Board, he was given a personal appointed board position for a further six years and so remains an active member.

• He is a clinical advisor to the Parliamentary Ombudsman.

• His national awards include Honorary lifetime membership of British Pain Society (given for outstanding contributions to Pain Practice). In this citation, it was noted that he had chaired 17 National committees. He also has a national clinical excellence award.   

• He has contributed to around 100 publications many from professional organisations.

• He chaired the clinical and ethical group (CLIPS) for the International Association for the Study of Pain and received commendation for chairing the International task force for the Global Year for Excellence in Pain Education.

• He was Chair of the Faculty Committee contributing to multi-professional guidance on CRPS undertaken by Royal College of Physicians and many other similar publications and is currently leading an FPM publication project on condition-by-condition personalised pragmatic pain.
