Ms. Nikki Khan is a Registered Midwife based in Devon. She qualified as a Registered General Nurse in 1988 and as a Registered Midwife in 1989 and has most recently worked within the clinical setting in a busy NHS Hospital in Devon. She has practised extensively as a Senior Midwife in the clinical setting in the NHS and the private sector, developing wide experience throughout all aspects of obstetric care and has a special interest in Female Genital Mutilation (FGM). She also has expertise in facilitating vaginal breech birth and physiological twin births.
Ms. Khan also worked overseas following her qualification as a Tropical Diseases Nurse in 1992 & was the Toxoplasmosis Midwife working on an advisory role within a well-known Baby Charity until 2017. She studied Law in 2000 & since 2002 has used this qualification to analyse and review obstetric cases for law firms from a Midwifery aspect whilst still practising as a Midwife. She also assisted in organising national conferences with relevant speakers – e.g., the ‘Perineal Trauma – Time to Rethink Practice?’ Conference run by Irwin Mitchell in conjunction with the Birth Trauma Association in 2009.
Ms. Khan was an Expert Speaker at the AVMA Conference in 2010 & also at the 13th Annual Clinical Negligence Seminar & Legal Update held at Gough Square Chambers on 11.10.12. She also worked with Dettol in an advisory role as their Expert Midwife in their National ‘Mission for Health Campaign’ launched in 2011 and worked alongside the Hip Dysplasia Institute to launch the ‘Is Your Baby Sitting Comfortably’ educational campaign in 2012. This campaign empowered women to help make informed decisions and reduce any potential risks of hip dysplasia in infants and become aware of the delayed diagnosis of this condition in babies. Nikki also acted in an advisory role with the publication of a Government 'White-Paper on Preconceptual Care’ for the Seven Seas pharmaceutical company in 2013.
Ms. Khan was the 'Expert Midwife' for the UK's monthly "Prima Baby & Pregnancy" magazine for over a decade and was both the 'Infant Health Expert' & 'Expert Midwife' for Infacol & Sudocrem for over five years. She has represented numerous high profile 'brands' including Huggies & Discovery Health and has also worked as an advisor with the British Coffee Association analysing new research in relation to pregnancy and in the neonatal/postnatal period.
She has extensive experience in medicolegal record sorting, collation and creating chronologies. With experience working as a medical assistant with Russell Cooke Solicitors (nee Evill & Coleman) while undertaking her LPC & CPE. She also worked with various firms undertaking the same tasks when needed (e.g., DMR collation, Silva Consultancy, Ascent). Finally, worked as an MLR nurse with Irwin Mitchell from 2008 until 2016.
Ms. Khan commenced drafting Medicolegal Expert Reports in 2016 and has been on the recommended AVMA expert database since 2016. She undertakes midwifery liability reports for both defendant and claimant, specialising in wrongful birth reports. She only takes on cases where the incident took place between 1989 and March 2024, in accordance with her NMC registration.
