Professor Ben Creagh-Brown is a Consultant physician at the Royal Surrey County Hospital, Guildford.

He completed his training in 2012, having worked at St. George’s, Kings’ College, Guys and St. Thomas’ hospitals and spent 3 years undertaking a PhD on the cardiothoracic ICU at the Royal Brompton Hospital.

Since 2012 Professor Ben Creagh-Brown has been one of sixteen consultants running a large (25 beds) mixed medico-surgical ICU in a medium-sized community hospital, with tertiary surgical and oncology services. The ICU treats ~1200 patients per year and includes the following types of patients: general medical/surgical including sepsis, shock, respiratory failure, pulmonary embolism, acute cardiac failure, acute kidney injury, acute liver failure. It is are also a referral unit for oncology and haemato-oncology, oesophago-gastric and hepato-pancreatic-biliary, maxillo-facial and gynaecological oncological surgery. During the COVID peaks Professor Ben Creagh-Brown gained significant experience with the condition and its complications.

Professor Ben Creagh-Brown has specialist expertise in mechanical ventilation, both invasive and non-invasive ventilation. He co-authored national guidelines (BTS NIV) and teaches on the only national course in advanced mechanical ventilation (Beyond BASIC). Also, in the treatment of septic shock, delirium and optimal maintenance of sedation.

He is widely published and involved in research including, the prevention of complications of surgery (pulmonary, cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, neurological and muscular); the complications of sepsis, particularly pneumonia; the role of the endothelial cell in shock states and implications for treatment of shock.

Perioperative Medicine
Professor Ben Creagh-Brown is an expert in Perioperative Medicine. Between 2014 and 2017 he helped run the cardiopulmonary exercise testing service ran specific clinics for patients with respiratory issues who were due major surgery – to optimise their condition and reduce their risk of post-operative pulmonary complications.

He has recently co-authored a systematic review published in the BMJ, a co-investigator on two national clinical trials (INSPIRE, SINFONIA) and a national audit (RECON), has lectured internationally and has published widely in this field. Also undertaking research into postoperative hypotension, delirium, muscle wasting, acute kidney injury, and determinants of post-operative gut dysfunction.

Respiratory medicine
Professor Ben Creagh-Brown maintains his clinical practice in the interface between respiratory and intensive care medicine. Specifically in investigation and management of respiratory failure, respiratory infections, and major pulmonary embolism.

Expert witness
Professor Ben Creagh-Brown has experience in expert witness cases since 2016. He has undertaken specialist training with Bond Solon Excellence in Report Writing Course, in 2017.
