Dr. Manisha M. Kumar graduated from the University College of Medical Sciences, University of Delhi in April 1989, with a distinction in pharmacology. She undertook post-graduation MD (Anaesthesiology) from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, India 1989-1992. With a further three years of Senior Residency at AIIMS, completing my anaesthetic training. In the UK, she undertook training all over again. Completing the FRCA in 1998, and received her Certificate of Completion of Specialty Training in Anaesthetics and Intensive Care in January 2003.

Dr Kumar has an interest in the ethical and legal aspects of medicine and has recently completed an LLM in Medical Law and Ethics from the University of Edinburgh. During this course, she undertook additional modules on Regulation of Healthcare Professionals, Shaping of Modern Healthcare and Governance of Innovative Medicine. Authoring her dissertation on ‘Legal and Ethical aspects of the Role of System Failure in Gross Negligence Manslaughter’.

Dr Kumar has been a Consultant in Aberdeen, Scotland since Feb 2003. She was the Clinical Lead for Obstetric Anaesthesia in Aberdeen for five years and, currently, is the Portfolio Clinical Director for Governance in Medicine, which is a management role in the wider hospital.

Her areas of expertise include Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Orthopaedics, ENT/Airways and Thoracic Anaesthesia, along with the Legal and Ethical aspects of Medicine. She has led the development of simulation scenario-based training -in the areas of Human Factors, Obstetrics, Difficult Airways and One Lung Ventilation. With an interest in Clinical Negligence and Adverse Events Management.

Dr Kumar is the Chair of Acute Sector Clinical Governance Committee in NHS Grampian overseeing governance aspects across all specialty areas in the Acute sector. This involves moderating highlighted clinical governance issues, identifying system risks and escalating concerns to higher management. All completed Level 1 investigations are presented to this committee for approval. She has also been setting up and leading a significant number of Level 1 investigations into adverse events.

For the last four years, Dr Kumar has been giving medicolegal expert advice for the legal firms and Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman. This has involved going through case notes and advising on the appropriateness of the clinical actions taken, identifying any breach of duty and negligence.

She has written over fifty Medico-legal expert reports over the last three years. All of these have been for the claimants.
