Dr Luke Gompels is a Consultant Rheumatologist and Clinical Service Lead for Rheumatology at Somerset NHS Foundation Trust. He leads a multidisciplinary team for the provision of Rheumatology services across Somerset, for the 580,000 population, to ensure team governance, and development and to meet the needs of patients and the service. He also holds a senior management role as Chief Clinical Information Officer for the trust that spans both acute, community and mental health provision across Somerset.

Arthritis: traumatic; degenerative; osteoarthritis; rheumatoid; spondyloarthritis; ankylosing spondylitis; psoriatic; disorders relating to; occupational.
Connective tissue diseases: systemic lupus erythematosus/SLE; anticardiolipin/antiphospholipid syndrome; dermatomyositis; polymyositis; Vasculitis, Sjogren's syndrome, Scleroderma.
Somatoform disorders: fibromyalgia; ME/myalgic encephalomyelitis; fatigue; post-traumatic.
Soft tissue rheumatism: shoulder; tendinitis; carpal tunnel syndrome; wrist/hand pain; tenosynovitis/de Quervain’s.
Drugs: anti-rheumatic; steroids/corticosteroid; methotrexate; sulphasalazine; cytotoxic, side-effects, biologic medications and complex disease management.
Other Rheumatological disorders: Gout, pseudogout.
Clinical Governance, relating to rheumatological services and care.
Clinical Management expertise, relating to the management of digital systems within clinical practice across all healthcare settings.
His current clinical practice is focused on assessing patients with long-term chronic conditions including fibromyalgia and chronic pain conditions associated with musculoskeletal disorders. He maintains a high standard of contemporary clinical expertise and prepared medico-legal reports, given expert opinions, and has been involved in preparing joint statements in the above conditions.
Dr Gompels has contributed to academic research focusing on artificial intelligence and clinical safety. He is widely published and has co-authored the highly cited article Artificial intelligence, bias and clinical safety, published in BMJ Quality & Safety, which examines the implications of AI in healthcare settings.
He was clinically responsible for the digital delivery of the global digital exemplar programme, the successful delivery of 2 mergers to form a combined digital team for Somerset Foundation Trust, and the delivery of digital systems across the trust through the covid pandemic working with clinical, operational and executive teams.
